Eco Living: Hopeland 101

In this post we have collected some useful information & tips about this piece of Paradise, called Hopeland.

Hopeland aims at becoming an example of self-sufficiency on all levels. Natural building, natural farming, recycling, respect for nature by minimising the ecological footprint, are all some of its pursuits.

If you are lucky enough and get a chance to visit Hopeland, this article will help you to get yourself prepared for your journey to make the best out of it.

Are you ready?

get prepared
  • pack light and practical, you need way less than you actually think. Really. (And you can wash your items during your stay, it dries in seconds!)

  • play with the idea of sleeping in a 4-bed teepee tent or together with 18 more people in a stone house with bunkbeds. We warn you, it is 100% fun either way ;)

  • having 35+ degrees during the summer days, do not forget your favorite sunscreen (50+) and cap at home. Also bring a water bottle (preferably thermo) with you for constant (cold) water supply.

  • bring a good sleeping bag with you. Despite having 35+ degrees during the day, at night it can get quite chilly and you migth feel cold in your tent. There are also extra blankets in the camp.

be conscious
  • get yourself prepared for the *MOST AMAZING* vegan dishes. Consume consciously and if you cannot finish, offer it to your friend. As a last resort: compost your leftover!

  • being an eco-village, the electric supply might not be as stable as at home, so extra batteries and powerbanks comes handy (electricity usage is from 10 AM to 5 PM)

  • while showering under the open blue sky, be conscious about your water usage too. (just as everywhere else on Planet Earth). It might even happen that there is no water for a while. It will come back as soon the system recharges. You might need to reconsider early morning and late night showers, as the water gets heated by the Sun during daytime.

  • use eco-friendly and bio products while showering, as the village uses greywater system to reuse water. You can also find some alternative products in each shower block!

make the best out of it
  • while in Hopeland, use all the opportunity you have to reconnect with Nature, with the 400-year old oak tree, the puppies, cats and just enjoy life. But pay attention ... you might get encountered with spiders, snakes and scorpions, too. Do not worry! They are usually harmless and you will get used to the sight of them ...

  • have a notebook with you to journal all your thoughts and inspirations. If you think you are not this type, believe us, you are!

  • watch the sunset at least once during your stay, it will be your sweetest wake-up call and stroll at 5:50 AM. As a reward make yourself a cup of tea with herbs from the garden.

  • there is an outdoor gym, a yoga terrace and a Zen-area to keep yourself fit physically and mentally

  • we encourage you to use your special skills, turn into an asset and contribute to Hopeland & leave your mark ;)
